Ellie Secures Podium Finish at British Sprint Duathlon Championships

It was a freezing cold morning at Oulton Park for the British Sprint Duathlon Championships — the kind of cold that makes even the toughest athletes question their kit choices.

“I briefly considered not wearing a base layer,” Ellie admitted. “But it was so cold I would happily have worn my big puffer coat… although that wouldn’t have been very aero.”

Perspective Before Performance

The day before the race, Ellie had watched a BBC programme featuring Chris Hoy, reflecting on life following a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Two messages stayed with her heading into race day:

Appreciate the small things

“It was a reminder,” Ellie said, “that sometimes you need a reality check — whether you're complaining about the cold, the clocks changing, or the lack of sunshine.”

Standing on the start line, that perspective mattered.

“I was grateful to be healthy, and to be there.”

A Technical Course at Oulton Park

Oulton Park provided a challenging but rewarding setting for the race. Known for its fast, flowing layout, the course demands discipline as much as speed.

The opening run begins downhill — tempting athletes to go out too hard — before quickly punishing any overcommitment with a tough uphill section around the hairpin.

It’s a course that rewards control and experience.

Working the Bike in Tough Conditions

This was a draft legal race, adding a tactical layer to the competition. After two laps, Ellie linked up with another rider — a turning point in the race.

“Sometimes you end up in a group where no one wants to work,” she said. “But not this time.”

The pair pushed hard together through strong winds for the final three laps, maintaining a solid pace despite the challenging conditions.

Digging Deep on the Final Run

As with any duathlon, the second run was always going to be a test.

“Your quads are completely battered,” Ellie explained, “but you just have to keep pushing.”

Despite the fatigue — and the cold — she delivered a standout performance, achieving a personal best on the run course.

A Result Worth the Cold

Crossing the finish line brought little relief from the temperature.

“I genuinely think I was colder at the finish than when we started!”

But the result quickly changed everything.

Ellie secured 2nd place in her age group at the British Championships — an outstanding achievement and a testament to both her physical preparation and mental resilience.

And suddenly, the cold didn’t matter at all.

Ellie Closes Her 2025 Triathlon Season with a Podium in Nantwich

Wirral Cycle Services’ sponsored rider, Ellie, brought her triathlon season to a strong close at the North West Sprint Triathlon in Nantwich, finishing as 2nd lady overall and setting a new course personal best.

Back to Where It All Began

For Ellie, Nantwich is more than just another race. It was the venue of her very first triathlon back in 2017. Returning this year provided the perfect moment to reflect on the journey from those early days of borrowed bikes and breaststroke swims to today’s polished podium performances.

Battling the Cold

Race morning was chilly, but dry — a welcome relief after forecasts had threatened wind and rain. The open-air swim left Ellie shivering as she headed out onto the bike course, but once she was settled onto her time-trial bike, the rhythm returned.

Thanks to a few midweek adjustments at Wirral Cycle Services, the bike was in top shape and carried her smoothly around the course. Even though she never quite warmed up, Ellie pushed hard through the 5k run and crossed the line with a run course PB.

A Season to Celebrate

This result marks the end of a standout 2025 triathlon season, one filled with PBs and podium finishes. Ellie’s consistency and determination have shone through at every race — and we’re proud to have supported her along the way.

Looking Ahead

With another successful season complete, Ellie already has her sights set on the next big challenge: stepping up to become an Ironman in 2026.

Ellie Wins 1st Lady at Shropshire Sprint Triathlon

Wirral Cycle Services’ sponsored rider, Ellie, secured 1st Lady at the Shropshire Sprint Triathlon in Ellesmere.

The event took place in ideal conditions, with the lake swim going ahead after previous years of cancellations due to algal blooms. Ellie stepped down in distance following her recent half ironman in Swansea, completing the sprint race in under an hour and a half.

With three distances running simultaneously, it was difficult to track positions on course. However, Ellie led the women’s field out of T1 and maintained her lead through both the bike and run legs. She crossed the line as the overall first female finisher.

This was her final outing of the year on the road bike. Ellie now switches focus to the TT bike for the closing races of the season.

🏅 Swansea Half Ironman: Not a Fast Time, But a Very Good Time

Wirral Cycle Services sponsored rider Ellie was back in action last weekend, this time tackling the Swansea Half Ironman — a race that offers big views, a tough course, and an incredible atmosphere. As Ellie put it: “Go to Swansea for a good time, not a fast time!”

With hot conditions and a notoriously hilly bike course, it was never going to be easy — but Ellie delivered a strong performance and a result to be proud of.

The Right Bike for the Job

Knowing the terrain in Swansea is far from flat, Ellie left her TT bike at home and opted for her road bike — a decision that paid off.

“I saw lots of people struggling with their gears on TT bikes as the inclines picked up. A few chains jumped off and there were some punctures too — I was just grateful it wasn’t me!”

Thanks to a spot-on pre-race tune-up and a brand-new chain from the WCS workshop (cheers Paul and Alex!), her setup ran smoothly throughout. With over 1,000m of elevation across 90km, Ellie powered through and made up plenty of ground after the swim.

One of her favourite moments? Nailing a bottle grab at the aid station:

“I've been watching the Tour de France and studying the pros. Felt like one of them for a second as I rode off, bottle in hand!”

Heat, Hydration & South Wales Spirit

By the time Ellie hit the run course, the temperature had soared.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she admitted.

Having learned the importance of managing the heat earlier this year at the Manchester Marathon, Ellie paced herself carefully — walking when needed, staying hydrated, and pouring water over her head at regular intervals.

The local crowd played a huge part:

“The people of South Wales really know how to support a triathlon. Their energy gave me a lift when I needed it most.”

Finish Time: 5:49

Ellie crossed the finish line in 5 hours 49 minutes, in searing heat, on a challenging course, with a huge smile.

It may not have been the fastest race, but it was an absolute triumph of strategy, grit, and good vibes — and a brilliant reflection of the spirit Ellie brings to every event.

Next stop: Nantes, to soak up the atmosphere at the Grand Départ of the Tour de France Avec Femmes. Well earned!

Back in Action: Ellie Powers to Second Place at the Quarter Ultimate Triathlon

Wirral Cycle Services sponsored rider Ellie Perkins was back on her time trial bike and back on the podium last weekend at the Quarter Ultimate Triathlon held at Ellesmere Lake.

After a snapped gear cable ruled out her TT setup two weeks ago, Ellie’s bike was carefully repaired by WCS mechanic Alex — who went beyond a quick fix. Diagnosing a misfit front derailleur as the root cause, he swapped it out for a better-suited part, restoring smooth, fast shifting just in time for race day.

And it’s a good job he did.

Halfway through the 45km bike leg, Ellie was overtaken by the athlete in third place, who came storming past at pace. Thanks to the aero advantage of the TT bike, Ellie held her position and kept the gap manageable heading into the final 10.5km run.

"It was hot, humid, and it hurt," she said. But with determination (and a strong opening few kilometres), she reeled her competitor in, pulling ahead as the course wound past Ellesmere’s iconic swans and café diners at The Boathouse restaurant — who unexpectedly found themselves cheering on elite triathletes from their brunch tables.

Ellie crossed the line safely in second place, buzzing from the hard effort and grateful to have made it through such a tough, energy-sapping day.

Next on the calendar? The big one: the Swansea Half Ironman in just two weeks. With its rolling, hilly bike course, the TT bike will stay at home — it’ll be a day for her road setup instead. Let’s hope the Welsh weather holds up!
